Wetumpka, Alabama, to Herman Chester McKemie and Ida Belle Lull
McKemie. Her family moved to Birmingham where she met the man
who would become her husband of 76 years, Aubrey R. ("Reggie")
Miree, Jr. They married in 1944 in Santa Ana, California, before
he shipped out to the Pacific Theater of World War II. After the
war, they settled in Birmingham, and in 1952, they moved to
Huntsville for Reggie to open a business. Dot worked for a few
years at Morton Thiokol and then became an active member
of the Huntsville community, volunteering and serving on various
boards and participating in and leading many women's groups. In
her "second career" after the children were grown, she worked
for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce in the
Government and Public Affairs Office. In that role, she was able
to bring together her organizational skills and connections made
through decades of volunteer work to serve local businesses and
industry in developing strong relationships with government,
particularly the elected representatives in Washington, DC. At
that time, she was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service
Award by the U. S. Army, and received recognition from both
Houses of the U. S. Congress.
where she worked with various youth groups and Women's Circles.
She was a founding member and past President of the Cosmopolitan
Club, a member of the Symphony Guild (serving as Chairperson for
one of the first Debutante Ball seasons), a member of several
bridge clubs and informal bridge groups, a volunteer at
Huntsville Hospital, and a member of a very active and
challenging book club. She played golf regularly throughout her
life, and even achieved a hole-in-one at the Huntsville Country
Club. She was a lifelong Democrat who worked with the League of
Women Voters, and was active in the Democratic Party locally, at
the state level, and nationally. Although she loved the family
"lake house" in Guntersville, her heart was always at the beach
of Beacon Hill, Florida. She was able to make one last trip
there in May of this year to visit with family and friends.
