Friends,

Many of our HDAA members have lots of experience with Zoom but it is
likely to be new to others. The rest of this message is intended to help
our Zoom newcomers pick the equipment to use and give them a chance to
try it out. Send me a message or give me a call (256-603-8208) if you
have questions.

Zoom can be used on a great variety of devices, each with its own
advantages and disadvantages. Let's look at them.

  * A laptop computer is probably the best combination of Zoom
performance and ease of set-up. Most laptops come equipped with a
video camera, a microphone, decent screen size, and a speaker that
allow its use by just clicking on a series of links starting with
the invitation to a "meeting" and continuing smoothly from agreeing
that you need to install a bit of software and then agreeing to join
the meeting with video. You can turn on and off video and mute audio
    at your pleasure.

  * The "smart phone" (iPhone or other) works much like the laptop, but
the screen is too small to show the full array other participants or
to give you a really good view of presentations. Set up is easy, but
you do need to place the phone where it gives you a good view and
gives others a view of you. As with the laptop you can turn off and
on video and mute audio at your pleasure.
  * The desktop computer is the best platform for Zoom, but your machine
may or may not be equipped to handle it. The needed video camera and
microphone are not always included with the basic desktop computer
package, and many owners never have reason to add them. Aquality
speaker systems is also an asset (particularly for events like ours
on Saturday) but not really required. So, a camera with microphone
and driver software must be added to make good use of Zoom on the
typical desktop computer. But, once suitably equipped the desktop is
the ideal platform for using Zoom since it shows multiple
participants at the same time, full view of any presentations, and
various options on the same screen. You can, of course, turn off and
on video and mute audio at your pleasure. You get into Zoom on the
desktop the same way you do on the laptop.
  * We have found that at least some Kindle Fires can be used for the
Zoom meeting but it may be a challenge with others. First, we found
the landscape orientation to crowd the log-in screen but it worked
fine in the portrait orientation (long side up and down). Clicking
on the link/URL in the email message did not work as automatically
as it does on some devices, but with an extra click or so it can be
made to work. We suggest you get an early start in trying to use
this device. That's why we will have some dry runs.
  * We know that Apple devices other than  the desktop computer and the
iPhone are used effectively for Zoom meetings, but we will need to
find someone else to give advice on this.
  * As a last resort the old-style telephone can be used to tie into a
Zoom event by dialing into one of the phone numbers provided. These
numbers do not include any 800 numbers or 256 numbers; so, whether
there is a charge depends on the account of the phone you are using.
Tolls for phone calls seem to be a thing of the past, but we cannot
guarantee that your account provides this toll-free service. The
meeting ID and numeric passcode will need to be dialed in when
requested. A code (*6) can be dialed during the event to mute the
phone and to un-mute it. Since the caller cannot be seen it is more
likely that the meeting host will need to ask for the caller's
identity to display that alongside other participants.

When you are ready to give it a try you can go to a dry-run HDAA event.
